KEY ISSUES
Truth and Reconciliation
Respond to the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, articles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, and other key documents such as the reports on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and In Plain Sight.
Justice - Equity, Diversity, Inclusion
Justice - Equity, diversity and inclusion is a priority that needs greater emphasis and support for people of colour, LBGTQIA2S+ and people with disabilities. Students continue to express concerns over bullying, racism, transphobia, homophobia, lack of accessibility and accommodations, and a lack of belonging. Education is the way forward to create and foster a just and fair society.
Climate Action
We must lead and champion climate action. A starting point would be to adopt, align and act on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Arts, Culture, and Sports
Years of low priority, poor support and inadequate funding have led to the decline of arts, culture, and sports within our schools. For many, a chance to participate in the visual and performing arts, and athletics has diminished. Now is the time to reinvest in these essential areas of K-12 and post-secondary schooling.
Mental Health and Well-Being
The pandemic shone a light on the importance of attending to mental health and well-being. In spite of the challenges experienced over the past several years, students and staff have shown amazing resilience. Moving forward, we must encourage and support greater awareness and access to health and wellness programs for all students and staff.
Trades Training
With predictions of over a million workers being needed in BC over the next ten years, investment in trades training is essential. The demand for more infrastructure such as housing, schools, hospitals and other capital projects will require a huge influx of skilled workers.
